After one round of qualifying, Randall Reid is the leader in the Street Race Small Block Power Adder exhibition being held during this weekend’s NGK NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte. Reid drove his turbocharged Mustang to an 8.517 to lead the eight-car field of competitors from Hot Rod Magazine’s Drag Week event.  Rick Steinke is currently second following an 8.623 in his popular four-door ’67 Chevelle while Steve Haefner also found the eight-second zone with his Chevy Corvette.

Hot Rod’s Drag Week is an annual event that highlights the world’s quickest and fastest street legal vehicles. Competitors race at four different dragstrips over a five-day period and each entry must be driven from track to track following a specific route that totals nearly 1,000 miles. There are additional rules that govern the use of crew members and additional support equipment. There are more than a dozen different classes at Hot Rod Drag Week but the Street Race Small Block Power Adder class is easily one of the most popular with nearly 50 entries. In Street Race Small Block Power Adder, competitors attempt to run as close to 8.50-seconds without going quicker. The eight drivers who are appearing at zMax Dragway this weekend will make four runs and the driver with the average closest to 8.50 will be declared the winner.
