Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals Saturday preview
Friday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals proved to be a speedy one. Even though the day didn't go as originally planned with the revised schedule, the fan-favorite event in the middle of the Ohio cornfields set up more spectacular racing for Saturday and Sunday.
Clay Millican set a new track record in round one of qualifying when he powered his Summit Racing Equipment Top Fuel dragster 339.11 mph down America's racetrack. Shawn Langdon reclaimed the no. 1 spot at the top of the ladder for now after he uncharacteristically qualified ninth in Bristol. Tony Stewart and Top Fuel young gun Maddi Gordon follow in third. Even though there were cooler-than-usual temperatures on Friday and cloud cover, drivers insisted that their E.T.s could very well be bested with what the forecast might bring on Saturday.
In Funny Car, Ron Capps rocketed to the top in round two of qualifying. It was previously occupied by Austin Prock, but Capps bested his 3.905 with a 3.894. Capps was the only one to break into the .80s on Friday. John Force Racing's Alexis DeJoria sits in third, followed by veterans Cruz Pedregon and Del Worsham.
Greg Anderson leads the Pro Stock field by one-thousandth and expressed that he is more than ready for the GETTRX Pro Stock All-Star Callout. He will have the first pick of the field, which includes reigning world champion Dallas Glenn, Eric Latino, last year's Callout winner Matt Hartford, Greg Stanfield, six-time champ Erica Enders, Aaron Stanfield, and five-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. The selection process will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by eliminations throughout the day.
Two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Gaige Herrera will see if he can hold onto the no. 1 position with his 6.779. Joey Gladstone, who is filling in for Matt Smith, is following Herrera in no. 2, and Angie Smith rounds out the top three. Smith, who is no. 2 in the points, is looking to get all the extra points she can to take over the no. 1 position in the points - as of right now, she is only 68 points away from reigning Pro Stock champ Richard Gadson. Gadson is currently qualified fourth.
Qualifying will continue for the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, while eliminations will begin for the Flexjet NHRA Factory Stock Showdown class and continue for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories.
