REYNOLDS, Ga. – David Rampy and Jeffrey Barker each clinched NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series national championships this weekend at Silver Dollar Raceway and the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.

Rampy, Piedmont, Ala., outran the Comp Eliminator class, taking the win and the championship in knocking out Chuck Haubiel in the final round. It was close at the start, but Rampy had the power to out run Haubiel with a 7.248 second, 166.60 mph run to Haubiel’s 8.192, 160.92. The win increased Rampy’s points total to 699 putting him out of reach of all others competitors and giving him the Lucas Oil national championship.

Barker, Kathleen, Ga., fell in round two but gained 10 valuable championship points, increasing his total to 675 in Top Sportsman presented Racing RVs, which put him out of reach of Sandy Wilkins, who failed to increase his points total this weekend in Reynolds. Wilkins went out to event winner Tracy Barnes in the semifinals, then Barnes went on to beat Shawn Morrow for the Stott’s Ford Top Sportsman event win. This is Barker’s second NHRA Lucas Oil national championship, having won the title in 2015 as well.

In the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Top Dragster class, Corey Ferrell and Lauren Freer went to battle. Ferrell was perfect off the line with a .000-second reaction time, and Freer was right there at .001. Then Ferrell went 6.488 on the 6.49 dial to Freer’s 6.857 on the 6.86 with Ferrell taking the win.

Aaron Allison and Jeff Hairrington grabbed the wins in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Allison, Macedonia, Ohio, powered to the win over Ronnie Courtney of Johnston, S.C., and Harrington, Kathleen, Ga., used a .005 second lead at the start to beat out Lindsey Brand, Hayden, Ala.

In Super Comp, Rusty Cook took the win against Greg Trew in a close double breakout, while Scott Steiner also won on a double breakout in Super Street over Matt Weston. Jim Perry, Niota, Tenn., was better at the start against Jeremy Mason, Richmond, Ky., in Super Gas, but Mason was better at the finish to take the win.

The NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League was also in competition this weekend with Carson Brown leading the way in the 13-17 year old class. Brown defeated Autumn Greene, running 8.062 seconds at 74.29 mph. Logan Westmoreland beat out Corey Kyle in the 10-12 division, and Brady Walker won against fellow Georgia racer Stephen Sexton in the 6-9 group.
