NHRA Southern Nationals will celebrate 40th year with nitro, Pro Mods, and more
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will return to Atlanta Dragway Aug. 28-30 for the 40th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway with a diverse slate of competition.
The Southern Nationals, which previously had been canceled when the Mello Yello schedule was revised by the NHRA as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, was added back to the schedule as the result of the cancellation of the NHRA Route 66 Nationals.
This year’s event will mark the 40th running of NHRA’s southern classic, which first debuted at Atlanta Dragway in 1981, where Shirley Muldowney (Top Fuel), Tripp Shumake (Funny Car), and Lee Shepherd led the list of winners. The defending event champions from the 2019 event are Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Ron Capps (Funny Car).
In addition to Top Fuel and Funny Car, the 2020 Atlanta event will now also include the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by J&A Service and the SAMTech.edu NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Series competition originally scheduled for the Route 66 Nationals.
Additionally, the Atlanta event will include Sportsman racing in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster presented by Vortech Superchargers, and Top Sportsman presented by Vortech Superchargers that previously had been transferred to the completion of the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, along with the addition of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Tickets for the NHRA Southern Nationals will go on sale June 24. If you were a ticket holder for the originally scheduled Southern Nationals in May and would like to attend in August, you may call 800-884-6472 for priority seating prior to June 24.
