Summit Racing Series national champions crowned at Auto Club NHRA Finals
Michael Sturgill (Super Pro), Chris Johnston (Pro), Ryan Montford (Sportsman), and Jim Werre (Motorcycle) were crowned the National Champions of the Summit Racing Series.
The top bracket racers from NHRA’s seven geographical divisions journeyed to Auto Club Raceway at Pomona after winning their respective divisional titles to battle it out for the overall championship to compete at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.
Sturgill, representing Division 3 out of Medway, Ohio, won the Super Pro title before he ever left the starting line in the final as Division 7’s Dave Meziere left too soon and fouled.
Division 6’s Johnston won the Pro title in his wheelstanding Keyport, Wash.-based ’98 Firebird in similar fashion after Division 4’s Brian Hughes left the starting line .001-second too soon and turned on the red-light.
Ryan Montford powered his Wichita, Kan.-based ’84 Grand Prix to the Sportsman win, taking an easy lap after Division 2’s Jake Ball red-lighted in the final round.
Division 6 added a second championship when Jim Werre, of Renton, Wash., wheeled his Kawasaki to victory over Jason Clampitt, who left .005-second too soon aboard his Division 5-based Kawasaki.
