Sean Bellemeur officially clinched his second-straight NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car national championship on Monday at zMax Dragway. Bellemeur took matters into his own hands in the semifinal round by beating Shane Westerfield to mathmatically lock up the title. He will face Dan Pomponio in the final round. The second-generation racer will be officially crowned the champion during NHRA’s annual awards ceremony in Hollywood, Calif., Nov. 18.

Bellemeur is in the midst of a great season with five event victories in eight final rounds behind the wheel of Tony Bartone’s Hussey Performance Camaro, which is tuned by veteran Steve Boggs. He’s won national event titles in Gainesville, Topeka, Norwalk, and Reading to go along with a Regional win, also in Reading. Bellemeur was the No. 7 qualifier at the NTK NHRA Carolina Nationals but came to life in eliminations with wins over Phil Esz, Brian Hough, and Westerfield. In the title-clinching round, Bellemeur lowered the boom with a 5.388, the quickest pass of the weekend. Bellemeur is now a perfect 7-0 in heads-up matches against 2017 champ Westerfield.

BELLEMEUR CLINCHES 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP

The racer clinched the 2018 championship at zMAX Dragway in similar fashion, becoming the first to wrap up a Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series title a year ago. Bellemeur can still drive home with a Wally from the NTK NHRA Carolina Nationals as he heads to the final round in the Top Alcohol Funny Car division.
