Jack Beckman defeated Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. to pass John Force in the Funny Car leaderboard, but he did so in costly fashion. The driver of the Infinite Hero Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat drove through a fiery explosion, blowing apart his Funny Car's carbon fiber body in the process.

The former world champion hopped out of the roof hatch of his Funny Car and walked away but the team will need to put a new body on the chassis before facing teammate Ron Capps in the semifinals. Beckman is chasing his first championship since 2012, while Capps is looking to win for the first time since 2016. Beckman enters the semifinals 24 points behind Robert Hight, who took home the 2017 Funny Car world title.

Matt Hagan will face off against Hight in another battle of former world champions. Hight is trying to extend his points lead, while Hagan, who is seventh in points, attempts to stay alive in the Funny Car title race. Both Hight and Hagan are chasing their third world titles in the Funny Car category.
