NHRA Today: NHRA's Graham Light discusses new points policies
NHRA’s Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Graham Light stopped by the Wally Parks NHRA Studio to chat with NHRA reporter Lewis Bloom about some of the rule changes for the 2017 season announced recently.
Some of the highlights of the changes include points and a half not only for the U.S. Nationals but also for the season ending Finals at Pomona.
Other refinements in the points system include the winner of the regular season will now go into the playoffs with just a 20 point (one round) lead; previously it was 30 points. Light and his staff also changed the procedures for qualifying. Qualifying will be based off the quickest 16 elapsed times from ALL qualifying sessions. The previous policy of only recognizing the quick 12 after Friday qualifying has been discontinued. However, should we experience Friday mineshaft conditions that affect fair competition, the top 12 policy could be reinstated at future events.
