Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals Sunday preview
Special edition 75th anniversary Wallys will be awarded today as the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals races to a thrilling conclusion at Gainesville Raceway.
After two days of action-packed qualifying, Josh Hart, Ron Capps, Cody Coughlin, and Angie Smith will lead their respective fields into battle during the Gainesville season opener.
Hart, in his first start as a member of John Force Racing, ran the best numbers of his career in qualifying with a 3.658. Hart also topped 340-mph, his personal best, but a regular occurrence for crew chief David Grubnic. Hart, the 2022 Gainesville winner, will take on Canadian Dan Mercier to kick off the new season.
Antron Brown, fresh off his $80,000 win in the Right Trailers Allstar Top Fuel Callout on Saturday will open against Gary Pritchett. Another Top Fuel match-up that is sure to involve a lot of intrigue features Shawn Langdon and rookie Maddi Gordon. Langdon ran a 3.681 while Gordon a 3.793.
In Funny Car, the story of the weekend has been the shocking DNQ by two-time and reigning champion Austin Prock, who missed the field in his debut with Tasca Racing.
Ron Capps is set to possibly take advantage of the absence of Prock as he is the leader in his NAPA Toyota with a 3.890. Capps will race John Smith in round one.
The marquee match-up in Funny Car features JFR Teammates Jack Beckman and newcomer Jordan Vandergriff who are No. 9 and No. 8, respectively. Vandergriff put the Cornwell Tools Chevy into the field with a 3.990.
Just six hundredths separate the Pro Stock field with Cody Coughlin as the leader at 6.523 while Chris McGaha landed on the bump with a 6.563 which means any one of the 16 qualifiers in the field can win. Coughlin, in his return to the KB Titan team, will be paired with McGaha in round one.
Six time champion Greg Anderson struggled in qualifying and landed in the No. 13 spot, which means a tough match-up with Deric Kramer in round one. Another one worth watching will feature Eric Latino and six-time world champ Erica Enders.
Angie Smith has had a quick bike all weekend and landed in the top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle where she’ll face Kymberly Morrell, who is the 24th women to compete in NHRA’s premiere two-wheel division.
No. 2 qualifier and defending world champ Richard Gadson is also set to face Geno Scali in an all Vance & Hines battle.
Champions will also be crowned on Sunday in the NHRA Pro Mod Series, FlexJet Factory Stock Showdown, as well as nine Lucas Oil Series sportsman categories.
