The re-opening of NHRA Drag Racing during the COVID-19 pandemic will take a big step forward May 22-23 at Texas Motorplex with running of an NHRA NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Central Region event on the famed all-concrete quarter-mile outside of Dallas.

The Keurig Dr. Pepper Lone Star Nationals presented by Driven Automotive Protection will feature the Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing season and will be the first NHRA points-earning event since the racing season was halted in mid-March. The event also will decide the final entrants for the annual JEGS Allstars competition to be held later this year. Two drivers from each of the two classes will qualify for the Allstars event.

Sisters Rachel and Megan Meyer are battling one another for the top spot in the Central Region’s Top Alcohol Dragster field and to stay ahead of Dean Dubbin. The sisters were teammates for the Central Region team last year as well. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Kris Hool and Kirk Williams hold down the top two spots but former world champ Shane Westerfield is breathing down their necks in third place.

The Texas Motorplex will be one of the first sporting venues in the state to host events following Governor Greg Abbott’s new directives on public gatherings and sporting events. Stringent public-safety guidelines will be in place for all who attend the event.

“We want to assure everyone that we are taking all necessary safety precautions to keep our employees, competitors, and fans safe during this event,” said Andy Carter Texas Motorplex General Manager. “We know racers have been staying at home for over two months and we just want to give them one of the first opportunities to get back on the track.”

In addition to the eight-car fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, the non-qualifiers for those fields can compete in a consolation event with a separate cash purse.

The event will be contested on May 22-23 with qualifying on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. On Saturday competitors in Top Alcohol Funny Car and Top Alcohol Dragster will battle it out for a winner’s purse of $3,500 in prize money. Not only will the NHRA Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Cars be running full five-second, 280-mph quarter-mile runs at this event, but the  Summit Racing Equipment Mid West Pro Mod Association will also be there with their exciting 200- eighth-mile Pro Mods, plus Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, and Jr. Dragster in MWPM points competition.
