NHRA Insider Podcast newest way for fans to get behind the scenes
The NHRA Insider Podcast with Brian Lohnes launched recently and, over the course of the first five episodes, has become a must-listen drag racing destination. Already climbing into the iTunes Top 100 ranking on the Sports and Recreation chart, The NHRA Insider Podcast is designed and intended to be an audio trip behind the ropes, into the pits, and into the lives of the biggest stars and stories of the NHRA Mello Yello drag racing world and even some outside of it.
Episodes are designed to be very listenable with a format that keeps show length at 40 minutes or under and guests range from well-known driver to crew chiefs and even track operators, among others.
Hosted by lead NHRA on FOX announcer Brian Lohnes, the show aims to entertain, inform, and excite in ways that are unique to the drag racing world.
“This is a way for us to really get some cool long form interviews in. The setting is relaxing, there isn’t a TV camera or a million people around, these are not made during race weekends when workloads and stresses are high,” Lohnes said. “I typically start the episodes with a monologue regarding the news of the week, whether it be race results or something else and then move into two interviews per show. Making the NHRA Insider Podcast has quickly become my favorite thing to do outside of being at the drag strip.”
There have been five episodes released so far.
Episode 1 – How To Win In Top Fuel: Lohnes talks with Mike Salinas who aspires to win and who has struggled to do so and Steve Torrence who has been the most dominating figure in Top Fuel over the last few seasons. The conversation is an enlightening look at a team who has it all going on and a motivated racer who is looking to emulate that success.
Episode 2 – Power Moves: Lohnes talks with Greg Anderson and Blake Alexander about off-season changes they have made to (in Anderson’s case) improve the performance of his team and in Alexander’s case to completely change direction in drag racing and become a team owner.
Episode 3 – Grit and Guts: Lohnes talks with Tommy Johnson Jr. and Cruz Pedregon about their careers and about how they have displayed grit and guts in the sport of NHRA drag racing over that time. Johnson was out of the seat for years and stuck with it. Pedregon as a one car team has continued to defy the odds.
Episode 4 – In With The Outlaws: During an off-week from the NHRA schedule Lohnes attended Lights Out 10, an outlaw drag radial event held at an NHRA track in Georgia. Alex Laughlin and Stevie “Fast” Jackson, two NHRA racers were competing there with Laughlin winning the race. Lohnes has them both on the show to talk about the wild experience and drag radial racing.
Episode 5 – The Ties That Bind Us: Lohnes has Dick Venables and Rahn Tobler on. The two men have been friends for more than 40 years and share a unique life bond that will never diminish. Both champion crew chiefs now, the men talk about their lives and their friendship.
