Ron Capps’ Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals – and the balance of his season -- took an unexpected turn Sunday at the event when his parachutes failed to deploy at the end of his winning first-round Traxxas Nitro Shootout race with John Force.

Capps, the top seed in the Countdown to the Championship, ended up in the sand trap and upside down in the catch net, which damaged the chassis of the NAPA Auto Parts Charger beyond repair at the event, and the team was not able to return for the semifinals. They completed the balance of the U.S. Nationals with a backup car.

Upon returning to Don Schumacher Racing headquarters, the team planned to fix the chassis, but discovered that the damage was too extensive. From the Wally Parks NHRA Studio, NHRA’s Amanda Busick checked in with Indy bureau chief John Kernan, who caught up with the teamfor the latest updates on their plans.
