The opening day of the 62nd annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals was filled with action, including the first of five Mello Yello qualifying sessions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle, as well as Pro Mod and Top Alcohol qualifying, the Mopar Hemi Challenge, and the continuation of qualifying and time trials in the other Sportsman classes.

Here are the day's top five highlights:

1. Nitro e.t. track records broken
Steve Torrence ran 3.702 in Top Fuel and Matt Hagan 3.856 in Funny Car to break the existing Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis track records.

2. Beckman speeds to track mark
Jack Beckman's speed of 333.08 was the sixth-fastest in NHRA Funny Car history and also broke the track speed record.

3. Hemi Challenge claimed by Daniels
Second-generation Super Stock racer James Daniels joined his father, Jim, with an impressive victory in the 16th annual Mopar Hemi Challenge, held Friday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. [Story]

4. Hess makes a mess

5. 'Big Chief' makes Pro Mod debut
Justin “Big Chief” Shearer, star of the reality TV show Street Outlaws, made his official NHRA debut during the first qualifying session of the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series.
