The aptly named 2016 NHRA Summernationals featured great performances on the opening day of qualifying before teams adapted to warm conditions that created exciting racing at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown.

Ron Capps' momentum from his Funny Car win at the NHRA New England Nationals less than one week ago carried through for another win from the No. 1 qualifying position. This win vaulted the NAPA Dodge driver to the top of the Mello Yello points standings. While Capps established himself as the Goliath of the Funny Car class, Jeff Diehl played the role of David. The independent campaigner known as "the Surfer" upset full-time teams to reach the semifinals for the first time in his career. Upsets abounded throughout the day, with Kenny Delco reaching the Pro Stock semi's, John Gaydosh earning his first Pro Stock round-win, and hometown hero Dom Lagana winning a round in Top Fuel.

Circle K NHRA Winternationals Top Fuel winner Steve Torrence finally closed the deal again after his fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season and his second straight final round. He extended his final-round record against hungry eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher to 3-0 in an exciting pedalfest.

The winningest woman in NHRA history scored her first victory in more than nine years when Angelle Sampey rode the Star Racing Buell V-Twin to her 42nd victory. She defeated both Harley-Davidson V-Rods during Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations before cutting a .002 light in the final in her win against fellow Louisiana native Jerry Savoie.

Greg Anderson scored his second straight win by defeating points leader and Summit Racing teammate Jason Line in the Pro Stock final. The winningest driver in the category in NHRA Summernationals history added a seventh E-town Wally to his collection in the 10th consecutive victory for KB Racing.
